How to give someone access to Google Search Console.

Free guide · About 5 minutes · No password needed, ever

To give a marketing partner access to Google Search Console, open your property at search.google.com/search-console, go to Settings, choose Users and permissions, and add their email as a Full user. That covers almost everything an SEO partner needs, and your password never enters the picture.

Never used it? Search Console is Google's free report card for your website. It shows which searches bring people to your site and flags problems that keep pages out of Google.

Is Search Console set up for my site?

1

Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in

Use the same business Google account you would use for Gmail or Analytics.

2

Look at the property list

On the left you will see a property selector. If your website's address is in that list, Search Console is set up.

3

If it asks you to add a property

Then Search Console is not set up for your site under this login. That is common, and quick for a professional to fix.

4

If you only see someone else's site

You are probably in the wrong Google account. Try another email, or ask whoever manages your website which account they used.

How do I add a user?

1

Open your property

Pick your website from the property selector on the left.

2

Go to Settings, then Users and permissions

Settings sits near the bottom of the left menu. Users and permissions is right inside it.

3

Click Add user and enter their email

Use the exact email address your marketing partner gave you.

4

Choose Full and save

Full permission lets them see all the data and do the day to day work. Done.

Which permission level is right?

  • Restricted can view most reports. Fine for someone who only needs to look.
  • Full can view everything and take most actions. The right level for an SEO partner.
  • Owner has total control, including adding and removing people. That stays with you.

A partner may occasionally ask for owner access for deep technical work. If you trust them, granting it is fine, because you can revoke it later. What must never change: your own ownership.

Stay the verified owner

Ownership in Search Console comes from verifying the site, through your domain or a snippet on your website. Make sure that verification lives under a Google account your business controls. Everything else can be granted and taken back.

Never share this

Never share your Google password. Search Console access is granted by email invite with its own permission level. A real partner will never need your login.

BEFORE YOU ASK

Common questions.

Should my SEO partner be a Full user or an Owner?

Full covers day to day SEO work, including every report and sitemap submissions. Owner is only needed for a handful of settings level tasks. Start with Full and upgrade only if they hit a wall. You can always take owner access back, as long as your own verified ownership stays in place.

What happens if Search Console is not set up at all?

Your site can still rank, but you are flying blind. Nobody can see which searches bring people in or whether Google is having trouble with your pages. A marketing partner can set it up in minutes. Just make sure your own Google account ends up as a verified owner.

Can a Full user delete my data or my site?

No. A Full user cannot remove your ownership or delete the property out from under you. The risky powers sit with owners, which is exactly why you keep ownership yourself.

Need a hand with the marketing itself?

Access is the easy part. If you want someone to put these accounts to work, tell me your business name and website. Within one business day you'll get a plain breakdown of where you're losing leads and the first fix I would make.
