SEO Mistakes Small Businesses Make: What 315 Trade Companies Show

The SEO mistakes small businesses make are rarely exotic. They are the same five problems, over and over, and most of them cost nothing to fix. We know because we checked.

Harvest Digital Marketing pulled public data on 315 roofers, plumbers, electricians, hardscapers and general contractors listed on Google around Doylestown, Newtown and Warminster. We read their Google profiles, tested their sites on Google’s mobile speed test, and checked the code on every homepage we could load. No company is named here. The patterns are the point.

What this post covers

  • Page titles that say Home
  • Slow sites on a phone
  • Thin reviews
  • Google profiles with no real website
  • Missing tracking
  • What it costs and what to fix this week

Mistake 1: a homepage title that says “Home”

The page title is the blue headline Google shows in search results. It is one of the clearest signals of what a page is about, and on most trade sites it is wasted.

Of the 252 homepages where we could read a title, 93 never named a town, a county or a state. 32 started with the word Home.

A title like “Home | Smith Plumbing” tells Google your name and nothing else. Not plumbing repair, not water heater install, not Doylestown. Google has to guess, and the competitor who spelled it out wins.

The fix takes ten minutes per page. Write the main service, the main town, then the business name: “Water Heater Repair in Newtown, PA | Smith Plumbing.” Do the same for every service page, each with its own service and its own wording. This is the cheapest ranking change on this list.

Mistake 2: a website that crawls on a phone

Most homeowners find a trade on their phone, often while something is broken. If the page is slow, they hit back and call the next name.

Google’s measure for this is Largest Contentful Paint, which means the time until the main part of the page appears. Google’s own guide to Largest Contentful Paint sets the target at 2.5 seconds.

On 24 October 2026 we ran Google’s free mobile speed test on 150 established trade sites from this list, the ones with the most reviews. 129 returned a result, and 121 of those missed the 2.5 second target. The middle site took 10.9 seconds. The middle score was 57 out of 100, and only 6 reached the 90 Google calls good.

A common cause is not complicated code. It is full size photos uploaded straight off a phone camera. Compress every image before upload and test again on PageSpeed Insights.

Mistake 3: too few reviews to look like a real option

Reviews do two jobs. They help decide who shows up in the map results, and they decide who gets the call once a homeowner is looking at three names side by side.

Across all 315 companies, pulled from Google between late August and mid September 2026, the middle one had 37 Google reviews. 122 had fewer than 25. 82 had passed 100.

The spread by trade is wide. The middle roofer had 80 reviews. The middle general contractor had about 21. That means in some trades a steady review habit is table stakes, and in others it is a real edge almost nobody is using.

The fix is a habit, not a campaign. Send a direct review link by text the same day the job closes, while the customer is still relieved. Reply to every review, good or bad. Google’s own tips to improve your local ranking say more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and that replying to reviews helps you stand out.

Mistake 4: a Google profile with no real website behind it

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business on the map. It works best when it points to a website that confirms what you do and where you do it.

27 of the 315 companies had no website listed on their profile at all. Four more pointed it at a Facebook page. That is 31 businesses, about one in ten, asking Google to trust a listing with nothing behind it.

A Facebook page is not a substitute. Google cannot read it the way it reads your own site, and a homeowner comparing bids expects to see real work, a license number and a phone number on a page you own.

The fix does not need a big build. A simple site with one page per core service, real job photos, your service towns and a tap to call phone number is enough to start.

Mistake 5: no way to tell which calls came from Google

You cannot fix what you cannot see. Without tracking, an owner has no idea whether the website, the map listing or an ad made the phone ring.

Of the 263 homepages we could load, 102 showed no Google tracking code in the page at all. No Google Analytics, no Google Tag Manager, nothing. Some site builders load tracking in ways a page check cannot see, so a few of those may be tracking after all. Most are not.

Google Analytics 4, the free version of Google’s traffic reporting, shows where visitors come from and what they do. Google Search Console, also free, shows which searches you appear for.

Set both up, then count phone taps and form fills as conversions, meaning the actions that turn into jobs. Without that, every SEO decision is a guess.

What these SEO mistakes actually cost you

None of these mistakes sends a bill. That is why they last for years, and why most owners never connect a quiet month to a page title or a slow homepage.

Here is simple math to run on your own numbers. Say a slow site, a vague title and a thin profile lose you four calls a month to the competitor next to you on the map. Say you close one in three, and your average job is $1,200.

That is 12 lost calls and four lost jobs a quarter, or about $4,800 in revenue going to someone else every three months. The real figure depends on your trade, your town and your close rate, but the shape holds.

Every fix in this post costs an afternoon or less. That trade is hard to beat anywhere else in a service business.

What to do this week

  1. Search your business name on your phone. If the blue headline says Home, rewrite it with your service and town.
  2. Test your homepage on PageSpeed Insights. Over 2.5 seconds? Compress your photos first.
  3. Text a review link to your last five customers.
  4. Confirm your Google profile points to your own website, not Facebook.
  5. Check whether Google Analytics is installed. If nobody knows, assume it is not.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common SEO mistake small businesses make?

A website that loads too slowly on a phone. 121 of the 129 established Bucks County trade sites we tested missed Google’s 2.5 second target. No other problem we checked was as widespread.

How many Google reviews does a service business need?

Enough to look like a real option next to your competitors. Across 315 Bucks County trade companies, the middle one had 37 reviews. Under 25 reads as new or small to a homeowner comparing names on a map.

Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?

Yes. The profile gets you on the map. The website is where Google confirms what you do and where, and where a homeowner checks your work before calling.

What should my homepage title say?

Your main service, your main town, then your business name. For example: Roof Repair in Doylestown, PA, then your company name. A title that says only Home tells Google nothing.

Can I fix these SEO mistakes myself?

Most of them. Rewriting titles, asking for reviews, compressing photos and linking your profile to a real website are owner jobs. Deeper speed problems and tracking setup are where outside help earns its fee.

SEO usually takes three to six months to move rankings, so the sooner the basics are right, the sooner the clock starts. Google Ads for trades and Meta Ads for homeowners in your area can fill the gap meanwhile.
